Seeking “The Self”

The journey of self discovery is a voyage unto itself. In fact, you are not really you, until you know the inner you. If you read my previous blog then you know that we all are looking for the meaning of life. Your understanding of your inner self is the start of that journey.

If you have started that journey of self-discovery, then there are probably some tips you should know about to help you along the way. Like Dorothy on the yellow brick road, who without the help of her companions, would never have made it home, these tips will help you to stay on that winding difficult road of self-love and self-compassion. Remember, it’s ok to take baby steps on the way to becoming your own best friend, so make sure you pat yourself on the back for taking that first step!

Schedule time for yourself: When you take the time to be alone, it gives you the opportunity to dive into your feelings and work on processing them. Find a quiet place where you can sit in silence, g meditate, go for a walk at concentrate on the greenery and breathe in nature, or even journal about your day and the thoughts and feelings you went through.

Perform deep thinking and reflection: Process your thoughts and allow them to fully sink in. Pause for a while to ask yourself questions like “What triggered you today?” and “Why do you think that happened?” and answer them to yourself. Honesty is very important here!

Work on your flaws: Be completely honest with yourself and accept that you’re not perfect and you will never be. Don’t worry, though, because nobody actually is. Working on your flaws is extremely empowering, as long as you’re doing it for yourself.

Accept what you cannot change: Nobody on the planet is perfect, and there are things that we simply cannot change. No worries though, instead of seeing your flaws are imperfections, look for ways to see them as the things that make you unique.

Trust your gut: In my case, saying trust my gut really means trust my intuition. It is much easier, of course, to disregard those strange signs we may see and question them because they are not the norm. The universe is constantly sending you signs and messages, but you won’t pick up on them unless you are really listening. The intuition is the vehicle for facilitating that communication. Your gut (or your intuition) always knows when things don’t feel right. Your gut is a friend who has your best interest in mind, so remember to listen to it.

It is important to remember that we are all a work in progress and nothing happens overnight. I have been on my self-seeking journey all of my life, and it will never stop. But remember, like Dorothy, you need to follow your own yellow brick road, and simply be who you are!
